Sewage Treatment

Has the cruise line installed the most advanced sewage and wastewater treatment systems available on its ships instead of dumping raw or minimally treated sewage directly into the water? In determining a cruise line�s Sewage Treatment grade, we compared the number of cruise ships in the cruise line that have installed advanced sewage treatment systems against the total number of the cruise line�s ships operating in the U.S.

Air Pollution Reduction

Has the cruise line retrofitted its ships to �plug in� to available shoreside electrical grids instead of running polluting engines when docked? In determining the Air Pollution Reduction grade for each ship in a cruise line, only ships that dock at a U.S. port that currently has shoreside power were graded.

Water Quality Compliance

To what degree cruise ships violated 2008 water pollution standards designed to better protect the Alaskan coast. In determining the Water Quality Compliance grade for ships operating in Alaska, we utilized the notices of violation issued to each cruise line by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for individual cruise ships.

Explanation of Accessibility of Environmental Info

Three factors were assessed: (1) ease of locating environmental information on cruise line's website; (2) whether information includes concrete environmental technologies and practices of cruise line or only vague and aspirational environmental goals; and (3) specificity of information with regard to individual cruise ships.

For the cruise ship report card, we graded 10 cruise lines and the 105 cruise ships of those 10 lines operating in U.S. waters. Cruise ships operating outside of U.S. waters from the 10 cruise lines were not included in this report card. Friends of the Earth relied on data gathered from the internet, government, cruise line industry, and other public sources in order to determine the grades assigned to the cruise lines. Friends of the Earth did not independently verify that the technology graded in the report card was installed on the individual cruise ships beyond corresponding with the cruise lines to verify the data gathered. When Friends of the Earth provided information we researched to the cruise lines for verification, some cruise lines responded with specifics and others did not.

Holland America Line

Holland America Line (HAL) is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator. HAL's fleet of 14 cruise ships carries nearly 700,000 cruise passengers each year. Eight of HAL's ships have capacity to carry approximately 2,300 passengers and crew; its five newest ships have a capacity of 3,200 passengers.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) controls nine percent of the North American market and, along with Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited, is considered one of the �big three� corporations which dominate the U.S. cruise ship market. NCL has a relatively young fleet of cruise ships; 10 of the company's 11 ships were built within the last decade, and nearly three-quarters of those have a carrying capacity of more than 3,300 passengers and crew.

Cunard Cruise Line (Cunard) is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator. Cunard's small fleet of two ships, the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria, were both built between 2002 and 2007 and have 2,870 and 4,343 passenger and crew carrying capacities, respectively.

Carnival Cruise Lines (Carnival) is a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise operator. Carnival boasts the largest cruise ship fleet in North America (23 cruise ships), with 22 of its 23 ships having a carrying capacity of 3,500 or more passengers and crew. Slightly more than half of Carnival's ships were built in the last decade, with nine of those ships having a carrying capacity of 4,500 or more passengers and crew.

Royal Caribbean Int'l

Royal Caribbean International (Royal Caribbean) is a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited, the world's second-largest cruise line operator. Royal Caribbean's fleet totals 21 cruise ships, including the largest cruise ship ever built, Oasis of the Seas. When launched in late 2009, Oasis of the Seas will be the size of a small town, accommodating more than 7,000 passengers (at capacity) and carrying a complement of close to 2,000 crew members. Nearly two-thirds of Royal cruise ships were built in the last decade, and nine of those have a carrying capacity of more than 5,000 passengers and crew.
